Water is a fascinating element - not only for research. Against the background of growing mega-cities and climate change knowledge about water becomes more relevant every day. 1.1 billion people have no access to safe drinking water and 2.6 billion people have no hygienically safe sanitation. One of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals is to reduce these figures by half by the year 2015. This goal is a challenge for all disciplines working on water related subjects. Apart from necessary resources an adapted urban water management is required. Very often, apart from a lack of technical concepts, also the insight is missing that water problems can only be solved in an interdisciplinary way. TU Berlin bundles its long tradition in water research by the network “Centre for Water in Urban Areas”. Water as a research subject is one of TU Berlin’s seven future-oriented fields and is being developed across five faculties.
